Brow Lift

(Medically Reviewed by Dr. Nguyen Thi Ly Na)

The eyes are the windows to the soul and the focal point of the face. Therefore, when signs of aging appear around the eyes, particularly with sagging upper eyelids due to excess loose skin, it can cause concern for many people.

To address this issue, you may consider undergoing brow lift surgery (also known as Subbrow Blepharoplasty). This procedure is often referred to by many people as a Brow Lift or Eyebrow Suspension.

In the article below, we invite you to learn more about this surgical technique, the benefits it offers, and how it is performed according to medical standards. Let’s explore right away!

What is a Brow Lift (Subbrow Blepharoplasty)?

A brow lift (or subbrow blepharoplasty) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat through an incision hidden along the lower edge of the eyebrow to correct upper eyelid sagging, restoring a clear, naturally beautiful eyelid fold reminiscent of your youth.

Although brow lift is quite common, it requires proper indications from the doctor to achieve optimal aesthetic results and avoid complications later.

Brow lift is recommended in the following cases:

  • Patients with excess skin on the upper eyelids that sag down to cover the eyelid area, leading to static crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes.
  • Patients with tattooing errors who wish to correct them for aesthetic reasons, along with excess and sagging upper eyelid skin.
  • This method is suitable for patients who have or will tattoo their eyebrows and want to lift the brow to subtly conceal surgical scars, while also wishing to maintain their naturally beautiful eyelid crease from their youth.
  • For patients who do not tattoo, it is advisable to choose the endoscopic brow lift method, which is more optimal, or eyelid surgery to address excess skin while creating a more even and aesthetically pleasing eyelid crease (if the eyelid crease from the patient’s youth is uneven or a hidden eyelid crease).

Standard Brow Lift Process

Brow Lift

Step 1: Comprehensive examination of the eye area, consultation on suitable methods

Patients are examined directly by the doctor in the eye area to assess the overall condition of aging around the eyes. The doctor will then advise on the appropriate cosmetic method.

Step 2: Explanation, trial for patients to see and visualize the results after treatment

The doctor explains and demonstrates for the patient to see the expected results after treatment. This is done before choosing the appropriate brow lifting method based on the condition, to help the patient achieve maximum results and harmony with the face.

Step 3: Health check and testing

Patients will be checked for general health (vital signs, medical history, current accompanying diseases if any….), to ensure the health and safety of the patient before proceeding with treatment.

Step 4: Detailed measurement according to the chosen treatment method

Currently, there are two popular methods for designing the incision line for brow lift surgery. Depending on the condition of the old brow as well as the patient’s wishes, the doctor will implement the appropriate method:

  • For patient with an upward arching brow shape at the outer third and then the tail pointing down (naturally arched brows): The doctor designs the incision line above, close to the lower edge of the brow, keeping the beautiful and suitable brow shape of the client intact.
  • For patient with a horizontal brow shape: In this case, the doctor advises and designs for the patient to remove part of the brow and later will tattoo it again. Because if designed too close to the lower brow line, it will cause leading to aesthetic asymmetry or an unnatural brow shape.

Step 5: Disinfection, local anesthesia in the eye area

The doctor performs disinfection and local anesthesia in the area where the client’s brow needs to be lifted, to eliminate discomfort and pain during the surgery.

Step 6: The doctor performs the surgery

Based on the technique and measurements taken, the doctor will begin the minor surgery to remove excess skin from the upper eyelid. Combined with lifting the upper eyelid muscle to address sagging, restore the natural eyelid fold, and eliminate crow’s feet.

In addition, in some cases, the doctor may recommend combining an upper brow lift to handle excess skin on the upper eyelid and remove fat through the incision at the brow to address the upper eyelid being droopy due to excess fat.

Step 7: Post-operative care and follow-up

At the end of the surgery, patients will rest on-site or go home immediately after the procedure. The doctor will guide how to properly care for the eye area to achieve the desired effect. Specifically:

  • Post-operative care: Clean the wound, apply moisturizing ointment twice a day.
  • Cool compress for the first 2 days.
  • Take medication as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Remove stitches after 7 days.

What are the Risks and Side Effects of a Brow Lift?

Brow lifting is a straightforward procedure, typically resulting in minimal medical complications. However, some cases of brow lift performed at unreliable facilities may experience undesirable complications due to improper indications and non-standard technical processes, such as:

Brow positioned too close to the eyelid

Brow drooping at the tail.

Poorly aligned incisions, revealing cosmetic traces and unsightly scars.

Uneven brows causing facial asymmetry.

Excessive skin removal may result in eyelid tightness, incomplete eyelid closure, or an unnatural appearance.

Wrinkles and drooping eyelids not improved.

The wound site is swollen and festering.

However, the above complications can be effectively managed and minimized if you receive treatment at a reputable clinic.
