Droopy eyelid

Droopy eyelids: Causes, signs, and effective remedies

Ptosis can make many women feel self-conscious due to asymmetrical eyes that appear tired and lack vitality. Additionally, this condition can obstruct vision and impact daily activities. Let’s explore the causes and solutions!

What is ptosis?

Ptosis (Blepharoptosis) is a condition where the upper eyelid covers the pupil by more than 2 mm or the distance from the corneal center to the upper eyelid margin (MRD1) is less than 4 mm. Below are a few images to illustrate for clients to understand:

The upper eyelid covering 1-2mm of the upper edge of the pupil is normal. When ptosis occurs, the upper eyelid covers the pupil by more than 2 mm, causing poor aesthetics.

The distance from the corneal center to the upper eyelid margin MRD1 in a normal eye is from 3-5mm. When the eyelid is drooping, MRD1 <4mm, making the eyes look smaller.

The skin of the upper eyelid is aging, lax, and sagging down onto the eyeball, causing ptosis. This is a common condition in middle-aged women.

Classification of ptosis:

Ptosis can be classified based on various criteria.

– Based on the degree of corneal coverage, it will be divided into 3 types:

  • Light degree: The upper eyelid covers the cornea 2mm or less.
  • Moderate degree: The upper eyelid covers the cornea 3mm.
  • Severe degree: The upper eyelid covers the cornea 4mm or more.

– Based on the position of the upper eyelid margin relative to the pupil when the eye is looking straight, this condition is divided into 3 types:

  • Grade 1: Above the pupil margin (lowered 2mm).
  • Grade 2: Over the pupil margin, not exceeding the center of the pupil (3mm).
  • Grade 3: Over the center of the pupil or more (4mm or more).

– Based on the distance from the center of the cornea to the upper eyelid margin, it will be divided into 3 types:

  • Light ptosis: This distance is from 2 – 4 mm.
  • Moderate ptosis: This distance is from 0 – 2 mm.
  • Severe ptosis: This distance is ≤0 mm.

Causes of drooping eyelids

Due to congenital factors

In the early years after birth, some children experience abnormal issues with the eyelid elevator muscle, or have blepharophimosis syndrome, leading to drooping eyelids, shortened palpebral fissure, inverted fan folds, and increased distance between the eyes,…

Due to other causes

Drooping eyelids can be caused by myasthenia gravis, nerve damage, or trauma in the eye area,… Additionally, conditions such as anophthalmia, microphthalmia, optic nerve atrophy, downward strabismus, or skin laxity due to aging can also cause false drooping eyelids.

How do drooping eyelids affect you?

1

Drooping eyelids on one side create an uneven appearance, disrupting the natural harmony of the eyes and significantly impacting the overall aesthetics of the face, making it appear lifeless and fatigued.

2

Drooping upper eyelids can obscure part or all of the pupil, restricting vision and affecting work and daily activities.

3

Having drooping double eyelids for an extended period increases the risk of vision problems such as astigmatism, strabismus, and amblyopia.

4

Drooping eyelids often cause individuals to tilt their heads back, lift their chins, or raise their eyebrows while looking, which can lead to spinal deformities and stiffness in the neck muscles.

Ways to address ptosis

Can droopy eyelids heal on their own? Droopy eyelids cannot heal on their own and require cosmetic intervention. Depending on the condition and different causes the doctor will prescribe an appropriate treatment method, aiming to improve function and harmonious aesthetics for the eyes.

To remedy the condition of droopy eyelids and regain confidence with harmonious eyes, women can refer to the following methods.

Shortening the eyelid lifting muscle

The doctor performs surgery to enhance the function of the upper eyelid lifting muscle to treat droopy eyelids. This method is applied in cases where the function of the upper eyelid lifting muscle is still at a fairly good or good level, helping to create a natural and balanced double eyelid crease.

However, with this method, droopy eyelids may easily recur or have the potential complications of conjunctival prolapse, eyelid gap,… if not performed by a skilled doctor.

Thu ngắn cơ nâng mi

Using the contraction force of the forehead muscle to indirectly lift the eyelids through a suspension wire

This is a method to treat droopy eyelids using silicon threads, thigh fascia/temporal fascia,… and is applied in cases where the function of the upper eyelid lifting muscle is weak or no longer exists. The implementation time is quick, effective for all types of droopy eyelids (including droopy eyelids in both eyes).

However, if not performed according to standard procedures, this method may carry risks of eyelid gap causing corneal inflammation, pulling the eyelids away from the eyeball,…

Dùng lực co cơ trán làm nâng mi mắt

Directly suspending to the forehead muscle

The doctor uses the contraction force of the forehead muscle to directly lift the eyelids, applied in cases where the function of the upper eyelid lifting muscle is weak or no longer exists. This method uses autologous material to ensure maximum safety, long-lasting effectiveness even for severe conditions, with less recurrence later.

But this technique is quite complex, requiring a doctor with good expertise, well-versed in the anatomy of the upper eyelid and surrounding structures.

Treo trực tiếp vào cơ trán

Treating skin laxity causing false droopy eyelids

The aging condition in middle-aged women can cause the eyes to appear to have false droopy eyelids, which can be addressed by eyelid surgery or brow lift (browlift) or eyelid surgery combined with brow lift (internal browpexy), helping to create a new natural eyelid crease according to the client’s requirements.

Note, women need to seek reputable facilities for doctors to evaluate, measure, and perform the procedure accurately, ensuring maximum effectiveness and safety.
