What Causes Under-Eye Wrinkles and How to Effectively Improve Them
Consulting doctor:
Dr. Nguyen Thi Ly Na, Senior Specialist
Under-eye wrinkles are one of the signs of skin aging that many women worry about. They are easily noticeable, especially when smiling or talking, and can make a woman’s face appear older than her actual age. So, what causes the formation of wrinkles under the eyes? Is there an effective treatment? Let’s explore this in more detail in the article below with Dr. Eye.
1. What are under-eye wrinkles?
Under-eye wrinkles are small grooves and folds that become deeply etched into the skin. You can clearly see these wrinkles when you smile or even when your face is at rest. Wrinkles around the eyes are most commonly seen in middle-aged women, particularly those over 30.

2. What types of under-eye wrinkles are there?
The skin around the eyes is often delicate and sensitive. Along with natural aging and external factors over time, the skin under the eyes can become damaged and lose its elasticity, leading to the formation of wrinkles.
Individuals may experience one type of wrinkle or multiple types simultaneously, such as:
- Dynamic wrinkles: These are the type of wrinklesoften appears between the eyebrows and on the forehead, due to facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, squinting,…
- Static Wrinkles: This type of wrinkle is clearly visible even when the facial muscles are at rest, formed due to damage and aging of the skin under the eyes. Additionally, over time, dynamic wrinkles can also become static wrinkles.
3. Why Do Wrinkles Appear Under the Eyes?
Wrinkles under the eyes can occur due to various factors, but here are some common causes:
3.1. Skin Aging Over Time
Wrinkles form due to the natural aging process of the body, causing the facial structure to sag. In addition to the lower eyelid area, wrinkles due to aging also commonly appear in the nasolabial folds.
3.2. Due to UV Exposure from Sunlight
The skin around the eyes is often exposed to sunlight. If not properly protected (such as wearing sunglasses), the UV rays in sunlight can break down the collagen structure beneath the skin, leading to a loss of elasticity, firmness, and causing wrinkles around the eyes.
3.3. Frequent Loss of Skin Hydration
Not only is it sensitive, but the skin around the eyes is also prone to dehydration, which is a factor that contributes to the loss of firmness and the formation of wrinkles.
3.4. Care for the Skin Under
Improper Eye Care
If the eye area is not properly cleansed, it can lead to clogged pores and slow down the metabolic process of skin cells, making the skin around the eyes more prone to aging. Additionally, if the skin is not adequately moisturized, it will become dry and rough, increasing the risk of wrinkles.
3.5. Facial Expressions
Expressions such as squinting, staring, and frowning, when repeated frequently over time, can also lead to the formation of wrinkles under the eyelids. Especially as we age, the skin’s elasticity diminishes, making it difficult for the folds to return to their original state after facial expressions.

3.6. Rubbing the Eyes
Frequent rubbing of the eyes can stretch the skin under the eyes excessively, gradually leading to a loss of firmness and elasticity, making it easier to develop wrinkles.
3.7. Unhealthy Eating and Lifestyle Habits
Unhealthy eating, excessive consumption of processed foods, low intake of vegetables, high-fat diets, late-night habits, and lack of exercise all accelerate the skin aging process. This results in early and noticeable wrinkles, particularly under the eyes.
4.Is it possible to eliminate under-eye wrinkles?
Under-eye wrinkles cannot be completely eliminated, but they can be improved. There are currently many methods available that effectively help reduce wrinkles and slow down the aging process, preventing new wrinkles from forming.
You should consult with a doctor for detailed advice on safe and effective treatment options for under-eye wrinkles.
5. Ways to Reduce Under-Eye Wrinkles at Home
Using creams/serums, applying natural masks, and eye massages are some methods you can consider to help reduce under-eye wrinkles at home.
5.1. Use Topical Products
Using topical products such as serums and creams that contain specialized anti-aging ingredients can help provide moisture and support the reduction of wrinkles around the eyes. Here are some active ingredients you should consider:
- Retinol: The effect of retinol is to accelerate the natural skin renewal process, removing dead skin cells and regenerating smoother new skin. It also stimulates collagen production, helping to reduce wrinkles and keep the skin looking plump and youthful. When using retinol, you should start with a low concentration and gradually increase it. Additionally, you need to carefully combine it with moisturizing and sun protection to safeguard the skin and avoid irritation such as redness, dryness, and peeling.
- Argireline: Argireline is a nourishing ingredient that helps hydrate and improve elasticity in the skin around the eyes. It also has the ability to stimulate natural collagen production, which helps fill in fine lines, thereby helping to reduce under-eye wrinkles effectively. Additionally, Argireline is considered a safe ingredient that can be used daily. However, before applying it to the eye area, you should perform a patch test on the skin under your chin or wrist for about 2 – 3 days to check for any irritation.
- Coenzyme Q10: CoQ10 supports collagen production and enhances skin elasticity, which helps effectively reduce wrinkles. Furthermore, it helps eliminate the harmful effects of free radicals, heals skin damage, and helps fade dark circles and brown spots. Although CoQ10 is generally considered safe, some individuals may experience mild irritation depending on their skin type, so it is important to conduct a patch test before use. Additionally, it is recommended to use Coenzyme Q10 at night, and when using products containing this active ingredient, be sure to apply sunscreen when going outside.
To achieve optimal results and avoid unnecessary skin irritation, you should choose wrinkle-reducing products that are suitable for your skin type, prioritizing those with natural extracts that do not cause irritation.

Consistently applying the aloe vera mask for a period will show improvement in the skin, with under-eye wrinkles gradually fading.- Almond Oil Mask: Almond oil is rich in fatty acids and Vitamin E, which helps prevent and improve signs of skin aging, reducing under-eye wrinkles. This method is very simple; just apply a small amount of pure almond oil around the eyes and gently rub for 1 minute. Relax for 15 minutes and gently wipe off with a cotton pad.
- Banana Mask: Bananas contain silica, which helps increase collagen production and can effectively improve under-eye wrinkles. Additionally, this fruit is rich in Vitamins A, B, C, etc., which help lighten dark circles and support skin brightening. To make the banana mask, peel the banana, mash it, and mix it with unsweetened yogurt. Apply the mixture to your face and leave it on for about 15 minutes, then rinse with cold water.
Note: The effectiveness of natural masks has not been verified. It takes time and consistency to notice smoother skin. Additionally, to avoid irritation, you should apply the mask to the area under the chin or on the wrist before using it on the skin around the eyes.
5.3. Massage the skin around the eyes to reduce wrinkles
Properly massaging the eye area will enhance blood circulation. This method not only helps relax the eyes but also tightens the skin around the eyes, improving wrinkles.
You can refer to the following method for massaging the skin around the eyes:
- First, warm up your ring fingers and place them on both outer corners of the eyes.
- Next, using very light pressure, glide and pull the skin from the outer corners of the eyes towards the temples. Hold for 2 seconds, then repeat this motion 5 times each evening.
Note that you should wash your hands thoroughly before performing this and avoid having long nails while massaging. Additionally, to enhance the effect, women can combine this with a serum for massaging the area around the eyes.
However, this method can only help reduce wrinkles around the eyes, and it requires patience and consistency over time to notice changes in the skin.
6. Treating under-eye wrinkles with aesthetic methods
Today, there are many modern aesthetic technologies available to help womenQuickly Reduce Eye Area Wrinkles:
6.1. Under-Eye Wrinkle Injection
Wrinkle injections are highly regarded by experts for their rapid effectiveness. When the wrinkle-reducing substance is injected into the orbicularis oculi muscle under the eyes, it inhibits the neurotransmitter that causes muscle contraction, thereby reducing the overactive muscle activity and minimizing wrinkles in the eye area. Additionally, wrinkle injections help the skin around the eyes appear smoother, firmer, and more youthful.
The effects after injection are usually most noticeable after 1 – 2 weeks and can last from 3 – 4 months, depending on care, compatibility with the substance, and other factors.
Wrinkle injections are considered to be very safe; however, a small bruise may appear after the injection but will disappear within 1 – 2 days, so clients can feel at ease. It is important to choose reputable clinics for wrinkle injections, ensuring that the doctor performs the technique correctly to prevent the substance from spreading and affecting the eyelids.

6.2. Filler Injection
Filler injection is a method that uses Hyaluronic Acid to enhance the structurethe skin around the eyes, which helps effectively reduce wrinkles. Not only that, after filler injections, the skin also becomes smoother, more elastic, and the appearance of dark circles is significantly improved. The filler injection process is quite quick, taking only about 5 – 10 minutes, and is non-invasive, so women do not need much recovery time. Especially, the results in wrinkle reduction can be seen immediately after the filler injection, and if done at a reputable aesthetic clinic, it can last from 12 to 18 months.
After the filler injection, there may be some bruising and slight swelling at the injection site, but these will disappear quickly, so there is no need for concern.
6.3. PRP Injection (Platelet-Rich Plasma)
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injection is a method that involves taking a small amount of the client’s blood, processing it to extract the platelet-rich plasma, and then injecting it into the lower eyelid area. This method will restore damaged skin, repair weakened collagen and elastin layers, thereby stimulating the production of new collagen, thickening the epidermis, and reducing the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes. At the same time, PRP injections also help eliminate skin pigments that cause darkening, melasma, and freckles, resulting in brighter and smoother skin.
Depending on the condition of under-eye wrinkles for each individual, the doctor may recommend 2 or 3 PRP injections, with each injection spaced one month apart. The results after PRP injections can last from about 6 to 12 months, depending on age, the condition of wrinkles, and individual factors.individual’s condition.
6.4. Chemical Peel to Reduce Wrinkles
Chemical peel is a method that uses acidic active ingredients to target the skin under the eyes, accelerating the process of removing damaged dead skin cells, regenerating new cells, and increasing collagen production to help reduce wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin. The eye area peel process typically uses substances like Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid, or Glycolic Acid at low concentrations.
In the first few days of the peel treatment, you may experience dry, sensitive, and dull skin, but after the peeling process, your skin will appear brighter and smoother. However, it is advisable not to perform peels at home and to seek treatment at reputable dermatology clinics with specialized doctors to ensure the correct concentration of active ingredients is used for skin safety.
6.5. Microdermabrasion Technique
Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive method that uses devices such as diamond-tipped handpieces, crystal microdermabrasion tools, and hydraulic devices to exfoliate the skin, removing dull layers and promoting blood circulation to the under-eye area, thereby helping to reduce wrinkles.
After this procedure, you may experience slight pain, swelling, and redness; however, these effects will subside within a few hours. You can use a moisturizer to soothe the skin and minimize dryness and peeling.

6.6. Laser Therapy for Reducing Under-Eye Wrinkles
With this method, the doctor will use energy devices to target the skin under the eyes, removing melanin pigmentation and stimulating collagen production to rejuvenate the skin and reduce wrinkles in the eye area.
Laser treatment should be performed by skilled doctors with an appropriate treatment plan. Additionally, the skin recovery process after laser treatment may take longer, possibly up to 10 days, and clients need to follow the doctor’s care instructions for faster recovery.
6.7. Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid surgery is applicable for cases where the lower eyelids show significant aging, such as excess sagging skin, numerous wrinkles, and tear troughs.
The lower eyelid surgery process is as follows: The doctor will make an incision under the eyelid, dissect and evenly distribute the fat bags in the eye to the deeper hollow areas, helping to flatten the under-eye region. Next, the excess skin is removed, the skin is tightened, and the incision is sutured.
lower eyelid surgery will significantly address concerns and maintain results longer. Additionally, women need to seriously follow the post-operative care instructions from the doctor to expedite the recovery process.
